Why you need to brush your teeth twice daily.
A Dentist, Dr Tobi Adeniyi, has advised adults to brush their teeth twice daily with fluoride toothpaste to re-mineralise weakened enamels and prevent cavity.
Tobi gave the advice in an interview on Monday in Benin.
Cavity is a form of tooth decay, usually accompanied by discolouration of the tooth’s surface and painful sensation.
According to him, the best course of cavity treatment is ensuring that decay never takes root in the first place.
“We can prevent cavities from forming by brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste to re-mineralise weakened enamel.
“Switch to electric toothbrush to ensure that you are brushing for the two minutes recommended by dentists and that it reaches every area of your mouth.
“Floss at least once a day to remove anti-cavity and mouthwash to further clean below the gum line.
“Chew on sugar-free gum to stimulate saliva production and wash away plaque.
“See your dentist or dental hygienist twice a year for check-ups and professional cleanings,” he counselled.
Tobi, who said that cavity treatment was dependent on the severity of the decay, added that bacteria in the mouth feed on sugary, starchy foods and drinks, such as fruits, candy, bread, cereal, sodas, juice and milk.
“Without proper brushing and flossing, acids in plaque dissolve tooth enamel, thus creating cavities or holes,” the dentist said.
