Why you must cut down your cholesterol.

Dr David Okorafor, a medical doctor has advised Nigerians to cut down cholesterol intake to avoid the development of Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) known as fatty liver disease.

Okorafor, Senior Registrar in Radiology, Alex Ekwueme University Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki made the call on Wednesday during a webinar meeting.

According to him, NASH is liver inflammation and damage caused by a build up of fat in the liver.

“It is part of a group of conditions called nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. Many people have a buildup of fat in the liver, and for most people it causes no symptoms.

“But in some people, the fat causes inflammation and damages cells in the liver. Because of the damage, the liver doesn’t work as well as it should,” he said.

Okorafor said that the disease can get worse and cause scarring of the liver, which leads to cirrhosis.

He said that other causes of the disease are common with people that are obese, abuse medication and do not exercise.

Okorafor said that people needed to prevent fatty liver disease by living a healthy lifestyle.

He advised people to cut down on fatty foods, saying that it was necessary to avoid refined food and reduce consumption of meat.

Okorafor says that omega three oil is good for health and people should consume it more.
